Principal Investigator: Joshua K. Wong
Institution: University of Florida
Department: Department of Neurology, Norman Fixel Institute for Neurological Diseases
Affiliation Duration: July 2023 - Present
Research Focus: My research focuses on utilizing machine learning and data science techniques to predict the progression of Parkinson’s disease. The aim is to develop robust AI models that can analyze complex neurological data, including structural and functional brain imaging.
Project Responsibilities:  By integrating diverse data types, I work on developing and fine-tuning machine learning models to uncover patterns and markers that can provide more accurate predictions of disease progression, ultimately improving patient management and outcomes.

An automated approach to medication management in Parkinson’s disease

This project is part of a broader effort to leverage machine learning to address complex medical challenges in neurology. Parkinson's disease (PD) is one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases worldwide. PD is characterized by motor symptoms such as tremor, rigidity, and bradykinesia. Levodopa is the first-line treatment for motor symptoms in PD, but its dosage management can be challenging. Neurologists must frequently adjust the Levodopa Equivalent Daily Dose (LEDD) to balance benefits and side effects as the disease progresses. This requires personalized adjustments to adapt to the patient’s evolving condition. By developing an AI algorithm to automate this process while considering patient-specific disease characteristics, we aim to develop tools that not only enhance our understanding of PD but also pave the way for personalized medicine approaches.
